Effective studying materials of the Russian language learning

We worked out the statistical apparatus, and on its base the program software was developed taking into account phrases and words forming in the English language.

Due to interesting in the spoken language, as materials for statistical analysis we chose subtitles for Hollywood movies that became leaders’ distribution.

The main reasons to choose:

1. Pictures’ directors and scenarists try to provoke the spectators’ illusion that happening on the screen is real. The most incredible events even take place in a film.

2. In order to make a movie popular, it is necessary that its heroes speak clearly and closely for spectators.

3. The cinema relates to the pop-culture, has the largest audience and influences on the common public culture very much, including the language culture. Very often phrases from movies become “winged words” and are used in a spoken language.

4. The cinema relates to the entertainment sphere that contributes a positive mood, and as a result, increasing of effectiveness to remember the learning data.

During the developing process of a computer system in order to analyze movies subtitles, the question on necessary and sufficient quantity of subtitles to build frequency dictionaries of words and phrases was emerged.

To solve this question, we began to add subtitles from different movies by turns. Every time we analyzed changes in an obtained dictionary. At the beginning, the words list ceased to change in the dictionary. The words form 50% of the text for all the analyzed subtitles, then 55%, 60% and so on. The changes’ termination served for us as a signal, that this part of the dictionary was full. The supplement of new subtitles does not influence on its content.

As a result, we received the frequency English dictionaries of words and phrases well-ordered on the frequency of occurrence in films.

Almost every word has more than one variant of translation into Russian. To understand, which variants of the words translation are most used in movies, we analyzed a core of sentences contained these words. It means that our dictionaries hold not only lists of words and phrases, but also their translation organized the same way, i.e. the frequency principle.

That principle to give materials lets progress very quickly, because the most significant words are learned the first.

Effective learning ways

Learning and forgetting are antonyms and closely inter-related. In 1885 the German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus managed to form the forgetting curve on the base of numerous experiments.

The Ebbinghaus experiments showed the process of forgetting begins after information coming, and for a very short time period a human being loses the most part of it. That’s why it is necessary to repeat information after its receiving. If during repeating, the learned materials are successively recalled, the interval to the next brush-up can be increased and so on.

The idea of varying slots depending on the answer appropriateness is realized in the training file method in the best way. The core of the training file method is very simple. At first, the box with five sections and the paper cards set are prepared, the size of which card is similar to the playing card. The received cards set is placed in the first box division.

The brush-up process starts when the first card is taken out of the first box section. The user looks at the right side and tries to remember what is written on the reverse side. If an attempt is successful, the card is replaced in the second box division. If not, the card is located in the end of the cards stack. When the second section is filled up, the user needs to repeat cards from it, and so on, until all the cards are passed through the five box sections. With the correct answer the fifth division cards are deleted from the training file. As a result, the cards are learned worse, will be repeated more often, but the cards which are easy to remember leave the training file. This method economizes the time, because it has not to repeat the cards already remained in the memory.

The training file method is time-proved and even admitted the most effective in order to remember large volumes of foreign words and phrases by the unique person as Wilfred Possin, the world champion in the learning field, listed in the Guinness World Records.

In particular, this method is underlined in our computer system of the foreign languages learning. We adopted it to our tasks. The cards never leave the training file. They are only shown more seldom with the correct answer. If you make a mistake, the cards are returned to the first box division. This improvement lets not only learn new material, but also repeat passed on, looking for forgetting. So, our computer system became also the support system of the passed material.

Effective process of the Russian learning and system support for the learned material

We suppose that effective learning process should be flexible, have an opportunity to adapt its own needs, be simple and convenient, not to require significant additional costs for time and efforts in order to meet and manage it. All these possibilities are realized in our computer system of the Russian learning.

Due to this assistance it is easy to learn not only words and phrases, but also idioms, phrasal verbs, slang, grammar rules and others. We took and analyzed all this material only from Hollywood pictures, and we formed on the frequency principle. The each subject is located in a separate English-Russian Dictionary, which you can add to the system in order to make a library (data base for learning). Besides, the user can table the learning process, when and how the dictionaries will be changed, which side of cards will be shown the first, and on which subject will be worth to pay more attention.

That flexibility lets use the system for all comers, regardless of the foreign language level. Beginners will lay the emphasis on words and phrases, intermediate users can repeat their knowledge. Due to the improved algorithm of a training card advanced students are capable to support their knowledge in the ideal way not to spent more time and efforts. It is necessary to add that the support system of the learned data is the most key principle of our product. We advise you not to expel already learned dictionaries from your learning process, but just to decrease the frequency of using them. To end trainings, if you are even absolutely sure that you learned all material, is not necessary. You can reduce the time training till 15-20 minutes per day.
